Wallpaper Designs for Walls: 12 Types and the Walls They Suit

Florals, leaves, geometrics, stripes, toile, murals, marble looks and more: twelve wallpaper design types, how each one reads on a real wall, and how to check the scale before you order.

October 24, 202620 min read

Most wallpaper designs for walls belong to about a dozen families: small florals, large painted florals, dark florals, leaves, geometrics, stripes, damask, toile, landscape murals, stone looks, Japandi and boho. The family is only the starting point. What decides how a design actually looks in your room is its scale, whether it repeats or runs as one picture, the color of its background, and how far away you see it from. This guide covers those four things first. Then it walks through twelve design types, each shown with a real Howdy design in a room, and ends with the check that prevents the most regret: seeing one full repeat at its printed size before you order.

Four things decide how a design looks on your wall

1. Scale. The same motif reads differently at different sizes. A small, dense repeat blurs into texture from across a room. A large one stays a picture you notice. On a repeating design, the motif normally keeps its size and a wider wall simply holds more repeats. On a mural, the whole image is fitted to your wall. Either way, the size on the wall is what you live with, not the size on your screen.

2. Repeat or mural. A repeat is one tile printed over and over, matched at the seams. A mural is one picture that covers the wall without repeating. Furniture hides part of either, but it matters more with a mural, because the hidden part might be the main detail.

3. Ground color. The background usually covers more wall than the motif does. It sets whether the wall feels light or dark, warm or cool, long before anyone notices what the motif is. You will see this below with the same rose pattern on two different grounds.

4. Viewing distance. Think about where you will usually see the wall from. A living room wall is mostly seen from the sofa across the room. A powder room wall is seen from an arm's length away. A busy small print that looks lively up close can turn to haze from ten feet away, and a big mural can feel crowded in a narrow hallway.

12 wallpaper designs for walls, and where each one works

1. Small-scale florals: the easiest pattern to live with

Navy Blue Vintage Rose by Margaret Clavell has cream roses, sage leaves and small white daisies on a deep slate-blue ground, printed as an allover repeat. Clavell is a surface pattern designer in England's Cotswolds who names William Morris and Art Nouveau as her main influences, and you can see it in the way the stems run from one rose to the next without a break. A dense allover floral has no single focal point, so it can cover all four walls of a bedroom or dining room without one wall competing with the others. From the doorway it reads as color and texture. From the bed, it reads as roses.

Navy Blue Vintage Rose by Margaret Clavell, in the Blue colorway.

The design comes in five colorways: Blue, Olive Green, Brown Olive, Brown Pink and Chocolate. Compare the navy version above with the Brown Pink one below. The roses and their size are the same, but the room is not. The navy ground is cool and crisp against white bedding. The brown ground is warmer and sits closer to the wood of the nightstands. That is the ground-color point in practice: choose the background for the room, then enjoy the motif.

Small florals suit you if you want pattern everywhere without a statement wall. The floral wallpaper category has more.

2. Large florals and watercolor murals: one soft picture

Beige Watercolor Floral Mural by Andrea Haase shows loose nude-beige flowers, cream petals and taupe stems on an ivory ground. It does not repeat: the whole wall is one painting. Haase has worked as a full-time artist for twenty years and has a soft spot for old botanical illustrations, which gives the mural its pressed-flower quality. The flowers are tall, but their colors are close in value, so the wall feels calm despite the size of the blooms.

A mural needs one thing a repeat does not: a crop plan. The tallest flowers should rise above the sofa back or headboard, not disappear behind it. Measure the height of the furniture that will stand in front of the wall and ask Howdy where the main detail will fall at your width × height. Our living room wallpaper guide covers placing a mural behind a sofa in more detail.

3. Dark and moody florals: luxury comes from contrast

Black and Gold Vintage Floral by Uta Naumann has oversized dark blooms and gold-edged leaves on a deep black ground. Naumann's studio reworks ideas from historical wallpapers, Baroque forms and classic floral motifs into new compositions, and this design has that old-master-painting mood. A dark ground draws a wall toward you and makes a room feel enclosed. That is exactly why it suits rooms you use in the evening: a dining room, a bedroom, a powder room.

Check two things before you order. First, daylight: a black ground in a room with one small window can feel heavy at noon, so look at a sample there in daytime and at night. Second, lighting: warm wall lights or a low pendant pick out the gold edges, while a single bright ceiling light flattens them. Light upholstery or pale wood in front of the wall, as in the dining room above, keeps the furniture from disappearing into it.

4. Leaf patterns: rhythm and color in one design

Multicolor Mid Century Leaf by Maria Heyens, a photographer and pattern designer in Hamburg, sets teal, mustard, olive, burnt orange and red leaves in tight diagonal rows. It is a true repeat, and Howdy's catalog lists its repeat at 24 × 24 inches. On a wall 10 feet (120 inches) wide, that is five repeats across. Leaf shapes give a pattern direction, so even a busy multicolor leaf has an order to it that a scattered print lacks.

Multicolor Mid Century Leaf by Maria Heyens. Its repeat is 24 × 24 inches.

Pick one or two of the leaf colors for cushions or a throw, as in the room above, and let the wall carry the rest. For the same leaf idea without the color, a single-color leaf on a pale ground reads much quieter: Rust Brown Leaf Repeat is one example. Browse the leaf wallpaper category, or read our botanical wallpaper guide for more plant-based designs.

5. Geometric and retro patterns: give them one wall

Orange Olive Retro Arch Geometric repeats warm Seventies arches in orange, olive, brown and cream. It comes from Fig and Willow Designs, the studio of Allyson Marie in upstate New York, who draws, paints or photographs motifs before turning them into seamless repeats. A strong geometric gives the eye a lot to follow, so one wall is usually enough: the wall behind a sofa, a chimney breast or the backdrop to a desk.

Geometrics have one practical catch. A repeating grid makes it easier to see a ceiling line or corner that is not quite straight, so look at your wall's edges before choosing a tight grid. Plain walls nearby also help the pattern stand out instead of fighting the room. The geometric wallpaper category has more retro and modern options.

6. Stripes: the design that changes a wall's proportions

Modern Luxury Emerald Green Striped by AashimaDesigns, the studio of Auckland-based pattern and textile designer Aashima Sharma, sets fine burgundy and gold lines on a deep emerald ground. Vertical stripes lead the eye up a wall, which is why designers often use them under a low ceiling or on a narrow wall. Whether a room then feels taller is a matter of perception, not measurement, but the upward line is clear.

Stripes are unforgiving in one way: they show anything that is off vertical, whether that is the wall or the hanging. Hang from a plumb line, not from the room's corner. Our wall preparation guide covers the surface first. For a softer, more playful stripe, Retro Abstract Striped in earthy colors by Roxy breaks the lines into mid-century shapes. More options are in the striped wallpaper category.

7. Damask and ornamental patterns: formal by nature

Dusty Rose Brown Vintage Floral Damask by Mona Ahmed sets large, mirrored floral medallions in dusty rose on a soft brown ground. The mirror symmetry is what makes damask feel formal, and it is also why damask looks best centered. When a sofa, bed or sideboard sits in the middle of the wall, ask for a medallion to sit centered above it, so the pattern frames the furniture instead of being cut off at an edge.

The brown ground makes this a warm damask rather than a stiff one. It works with cream upholstery, warm wood and brass. The damask wallpaper category has lighter and darker versions.

8. Toile and storybook scenes: quiet from the door, stories up close

Whimsical Countryside Toile by Sue Cheer is full of hand-drawn rabbits, ducks, wildflowers and picnic scenes. Cheer, a designer based in New Zealand, starts every pattern as a hand-drawn sketch. Toile prints a whole scene in one or two colors, so from across the room it reads as a soft texture. Only up close does it turn into little stories. That makes it a natural fit for nurseries and kids' rooms, where the people who look at the wall the longest are often a few inches from it.

It comes in eight colorways, from navy and dusty blue to sage, pink and warm taupe, so it can stay calm or carry more color. See the kids' room category and our kids' wallpaper post for more storybook designs.

9. Landscape murals: a view on a wall without one

Serene Blue Mountain Landscape Mural, designed by Howdy Wallpaper, layers soft blue mountains under a pale sun and a line of birds. A landscape needs a long, mostly uninterrupted wall. Windows and doors cut through a scene more visibly than they cut through a repeat, because the eye expects a horizon to continue.

The horizon line is the detail to plan. In the room above, the mountains rise above the sofa and the sun and birds sit in clear space. On your wall, mark the top of the furniture on a photo and ask Howdy where the sun and horizon will fall at your size. The wall mural category and landscape category have more scenes. For a view of your own, the custom photo mural prints your image to your wall size.

10. Marble and stone looks: a material instead of a pattern

Gray Gold Agate Marble Mural, also by Andrea Haase, is one large non-repeating composition of gray, ivory and charcoal stone with gold veining. A stone look behaves like a surface rather than a pattern, so it suits rooms where you want calm with some weight: a bedroom wall, an entry, the wall behind a bathroom vanity.

One distinction matters here. A printed marble or concrete look is a flat print of a texture. It does not add relief and does not hide bumps in the wall. If your wall itself is textured, read our guide to wallpaper on textured walls first. For a bathroom, our bathroom wallpaper ideas explain which walls suit wallpaper. More stone designs are in the marble wallpaper category.

11. Japandi and minimal designs: as much empty space as pattern

Bamboo Forest puts dark bamboo stems against a soft, plaster-gray ground. Japandi design leaves space empty on purpose. Here the gray ground does most of the work and the stems give the wall a vertical line, like a stripe drawn by nature. It sits well with pale wood, plants, linen and low furniture, and it rarely competes with art or shelving.

Our Japandi wallpaper trends post goes deeper into the style, and the Japandi wallpaper category collects the designs.

12. Boho and earthy prints: handmade warmth

Earthy Tribal Botanical Floral Boho, also by Mona Ahmed, runs tan florals and chevrons in vertical bands on a cream ground, like a block print. Boho patterns look handmade, so they are forgiving: they sit happily behind mixed furniture, rattan, leather and layered rugs. The vertical bands also act like a soft stripe, which gives the wall structure without the strictness of real stripes.

Repeat pattern or mural: what changes when you order

Every design above is either a repeat or a mural, and that changes what you need to check.

Repeat pattern Mural
What it is One tile printed over and over, matched at the seams One picture covering the whole wall
On a wider wall More repeats; the motif normally keeps its size The picture is fitted to the wall
Furniture in front Hides some repeats; the pattern still reads Can hide the main detail
What to ask Howdy The printed size of one repeat Where the main detail falls at your width × height
Designs in this guide Small florals, leaves, geometrics, stripes, damask, toile, boho Watercolor floral, landscape, marble, bamboo forest
Diagram comparing a repeating wallpaper tile with one outlined repeat and a single landscape mural spread across panels

Concept image. A repeat is one tile matched at every seam. A mural is one picture spread across the panels.

Repeats also differ in how they line up at the seam: straight, drop or random match. Brewster's wallpaper glossary explains each one. Whichever you choose, you order a Howdy design by your wall's width and height, in inches, centimeters or feet. Our measuring guide shows how to measure the wall correctly.

See one full repeat before you order

A sample is the best way to judge color, finish and material. It is not a reliable way to judge pattern. Howdy's samples are 15 × 12 inches, which is 180 square inches. One repeat of the Mid Century Leaf design is 24 × 24 inches, which is 576 square inches. So the sample shows less than a third of a single repeat. You can see the leaves, but not how the leaves read across a wall.

One customer described exactly this in a review on Howdy's site. They ordered a sample "so I could see the color, texture, material, and pattern," then found the full wallpaper "dramatically different" on the wall, and recommended "confirming with the seller pattern sizes" before ordering. Here is how to avoid that:

  1. Order a sample in the material you plan to use. Look at its color in daylight and in evening light, next to your trim and furniture.
  2. Ask Howdy for the printed size of one repeat, or for a mural, where the main detail will fall at your width × height.
  3. Print or draw a rectangle that size, tape it to the wall at eye height, and look at it from wherever you will usually see the wall.
  4. For a mural, mark the furniture height on a photo of the wall and check that the main detail clears it.

Concept image. A 15 × 12 inch sample shows less than a third of one 24 × 24 inch repeat.

Does the material change the design?

No. Every design in this guide is offered in three materials: Standard Paper, Canvas Non Woven and Peel and Stick Texture. The print is the same on each. What changes is the finish, how it goes on the wall and which walls it suits. Choose the design first, then the material for the wall and the room. Our guide to wallpaper materials compares the three. If you are leaning toward peel and stick, start with the peel and stick wallpaper category and check the wall preparation it needs.

Before you order: a quick checklist

  • ☐ The design type fits the room's job: pattern everywhere, or one feature wall.
  • ☐ You have chosen the ground color in daylight and in evening light.
  • ☐ You know whether the design is a repeat or a mural.
  • ☐ You have seen one repeat at its printed size from across the room.
  • ☐ For a mural, the main detail clears the furniture.
  • ☐ You have measured the full width and height of the wall.
  • ☐ You have chosen the material for this wall.

Wallpaper design FAQ

What wallpaper design is best for a small room?

There is no single answer. A small, dense repeat on a light ground reads calm and even. A dark allover floral can make a small room feel deliberate and cozy instead of cramped, which is why it often works in a powder room. Neither effect is guaranteed, so look at a sample in the room's own light, from the doorway.

What is the difference between a repeat pattern and a mural?

A repeat is one tile printed over and over and matched at the seams, so a wider wall shows more repeats. A mural is a single picture fitted to your wall, so its crop and the position of its main detail matter more. The table above sets out what to check for each.

Which wallpaper designs are popular right now?

Among the designs Howdy's designers have added most recently, vintage florals, mid-century leaves and geometrics, toile and painted murals stand out. Popularity matters less than fit, though. A design that suits your room's light, furniture and viewing distance will outlast any trend.

Can I get a wallpaper design in a different color?

Often, yes. Many designs come in several colorways: Navy Blue Vintage Rose comes in five and Whimsical Countryside Toile in eight. Check the color options on each product page. For an image of your own, use the custom photo mural.

How do I know how big the pattern will be on my wall?

Ask Howdy for the printed size of one repeat, or for a mural, where the main detail will fall at your width × height. Then tape a paper rectangle of that size to the wall and look at it from across the room. A sample alone will not show you the scale.

Where to start

Choose the design family that fits the room's job, then the ground color that fits its light, then check the scale at full size. If you already know the style you want, start with the floral, geometric or wall mural categories. If a designer's style caught your eye, every artist above has their own page in Howdy's designer directory.

I would caution anyone ordering wallpaper from here to order a sample and carefully consider how the pattern will be scaled before purchasing. I ordered a sample specifically so I could see the color, texture, material, and pattern before committing to wallpaper for an entire wall. Based on what I saw from the sample, I purchased the full size wallpaper. When the full wallpaper arrived, it was dramatically different in appearance and not at all what I was looking for, for my wall. I would recommend confirming with the seller pattern sizes before ordering a full scale. While I was extremely disappointed, in the end the seller was very responsive and did make the situation right. I was very appreciative.

The shipping was very quick! But the package arrived with the label barely hanging on. The prints look very good and the sample came with two options of pattern size. Tho they do have a logo printed on the front fairly large so I'll have to cut that off if I want to use the other sized print for something else so you lose a bit of length.
