Wallpaper for Living Room Walls: 9 Ideas, Starting With the Wall

The right wallpaper for a living room wall depends on what stands in front of it. Here are nine ideas sorted by wall, each with a real design, plus how to check the pattern scale before you order.

The best wallpaper for a living room wall depends less on the pattern than on what stands in front of the wall. A sofa hides the lower part of it. A TV puts a black rectangle in the middle of it. A fireplace already holds the room's attention. So choose the wall first, then the design. Below are four quick checks, nine ideas sorted by wall, each with a real design you can order to size, and the one test that prevents the most common disappointment: a pattern that looks right in your hand and wrong on the wall.

Four checks before you choose a design

1. Which wall? Start with the wall behind the main seating or the wall you see as you walk in. Designer Christina Halasz of Halasz Designs puts it plainly: "Wallpaper is best used as a focal point," behind a sofa, on the TV wall, or on a wall visible from the hallway (via Tribune News Service).

2. Is there already a focal point? A fireplace or a built-in media unit already leads the room. Melanie Adams of Wallpaper Direct warns against a feature wall that competes with it and suggests a paper that complements it instead (Ideal Home). Either paper the feature itself or keep the paper quiet.

3. How much daylight? With plenty of window light, you can use anything from pale to very dark. In a room with little daylight, a dark paper can feel cave-like, as one wallpaper designer told the same Tribune piece. Look at the room at noon and in the evening before choosing a dark design.

4. What will cover the wall? Photograph the wall with its furniture in place. The sofa back, the TV, shelving and art all hide part of the design. That decides whether you want an all-over repeat, which still reads around furniture, or a mural, whose best detail must stay visible.

Wall What covers it Designs that suit it
Behind the sofa Lower part of the wall A mural with its main detail high, or any repeat
TV wall A black rectangle in the middle Dark, low-contrast designs
Chimney breast Mantel and art One bold pattern on a narrow panel
Long, plain wall Little or nothing Horizontal movement, large scale
Above wainscoting Nothing above the rail Busy florals and full-detail patterns
Behind shelving or a console Objects at several heights Patchwork and all-over patterns with no single focal motif

Choose the wall first: what stands in front of it decides the design.

9 living room wallpaper ideas, wall by wall

1. Behind the sofa: a scenic mural with its detail up high

The wall behind a sofa is the most common feature wall in a living room, and a mural suits it, provided the best part of the picture sits above the sofa back. Green Tropical Peacock Jungle works because its detail is high on the wall: palms, a pale lagoon and peacocks against a soft pastel sky, with dense foliage at the bottom where the sofa will cover it anyway.

Measure the height of the sofa back and give it to Howdy with your wall size, so the crop places the birds and the horizon above it. If you like this direction, our tropical wallpaper guide has more designs.

Best wall: behind a sofa or a low console, with nothing tall in front of it.

2. The TV wall: a dark floral that lets the screen disappear

A switched-off TV is a black rectangle. On a pale, busy wall it looks like a hole; on a dark wall it sits back into the surface. Midnight Navy Blue Floral, original artwork by Uta Naumann, uses shades from smoky indigo to blue-black, and its peonies are defined by shadow rather than contrast. Up close it is rich; from the sofa, it is a deep, quiet backdrop for the screen.

For a purple room, the same artist's Dark Purple Rose does the same job in wine, eggplant and violet, with a single dusty mauve rose for light. Check the daylight first (check 3): a dark TV wall needs lamps, not just the screen.

Best wall: the TV wall, in a room with good daylight or plenty of lamps.

3. The chimney breast: one bold geometric between plain alcoves

A chimney breast is a ready-made frame: a narrow, defined panel that can carry a strong pattern without it spreading across the room. Cream Olive Teal Atomic Pods by Maria Heyens is a large mid-century repeat of linked olive and teal pods with brown dots on a cream ground. On a full wall it would be a lot. On a chimney breast, with the alcoves painted cream or teal from the paper, it reads as one confident panel above the mantel.

This also settles the focal-point problem in check 2: the paper and the fireplace become one feature. More options are in the geometric wallpaper collection.

Best wall: a chimney breast or any narrow, framed section of wall.

4. A long wall: horizontal bands in earth tones

A long, uninterrupted wall can take a design with horizontal movement, which leads the eye along it rather than up. Abstract Desert Landscape by Mona Ahmed layers bands of beige, cream, brown and black with fine botanical drawing. It suits a brown or earth-toned room with wood floors, leather and linen, and because it has no single focal point, a sofa or sideboard in front of it costs you nothing.

On a wall with a low ceiling, choose idea 5 instead: horizontal bands emphasize width, not height.

Best wall: a long wall with low furniture, in a room of normal ceiling height or taller.

5. A low ceiling: vertical stripes

Vertical stripes draw the eye upward, which is why they are the usual choice for a living room with a low ceiling. This is a design effect, not a measurement, but it is a reliable one. Classic Vertical Green Stripe is a two-tone green stripe that works on one wall or all four, with white trim and warm wood.

Stripes show every error. Corners and ceilings are rarely straight, so hang from a plumb line, not from the corner, and look at the ceiling line before choosing a stripe for a room where it visibly slopes. Browse more in the striped wallpaper collection.

Best wall: any wall in a room with a low ceiling and fairly straight corners.

6. Above wainscoting or a chair rail: a busy vintage floral

Paper above a chair rail or wainscoting gives you a full-detail pattern at the height where nothing stands in front of it, and the panelling below takes the knocks from chairs and feet. Vintage Teal Floral is a distressed, Kalamkari-style floral in cream on teal: busy enough to read from across the room, softened by its aged background.

Busy prints are easier to live with above a rail than from floor to ceiling, a point both Ideal Home and Homes & Gardens make. It also means less wallpaper to order.

Best wall: the upper wall above wainscoting or a chair rail, on one wall or all of them.

7. All four walls: a small botanical repeat

If the room already has a focal point, papering every wall in a small, quiet repeat turns the pattern into background rather than a feature. Botanical Wildflower by Margaret Clavell is a small wildflower repeat in four colourways: deep blue-gray, soft sage, dusty rose and charcoal. Soft sage is the quietest; charcoal has the most contrast.

From across the room a small repeat reads almost as texture, so art and mirrors can hang on it without competing. Order samples of two colourways and compare them on two different walls; the colour will shift with the light from each window.

Best wall: all four walls, in a room where the fireplace, art or furniture is the feature.

8. Texture instead of pattern

Sometimes the right living room wallpaper has no motif at all. Where a gallery wall, a large painting or open shelving is the feature, a printed texture gives the wall depth without competing. Concrete Texture Warm Beige has the tonal variation of polished plaster in warm mineral beige. For more colour, Green Textured Concrete does the same in deep olive.

This is a printed texture on a smooth wall, not a fix for a bumpy one. If your wall has orange-peel or knockdown texture, read our textured walls guide first.

Best wall: an open-plan wall, or any wall that will carry art.

9. Behind a console or shelving: a boho patchwork

A mural fails behind tall shelving because the objects cut its picture into pieces. A patchwork does not, because there is no single picture to lose. Boho Tile Teal Olive is a grid of patterned tiles in teal, olive and cream, like a wall of mismatched vintage cement tiles. Plants, books and a record player in front of it add to the look.

Keep the furniture in front simple and low, such as light wood or rattan, and let the wall carry the pattern.

Best wall: behind a media console, an open bookcase or a reading corner.

Check the pattern scale from the farthest seat

This is the step people skip. One Howdy customer, in a review on our product pages, ordered a sample "so I could see the color, texture, material, and pattern," then found that the full wall looked "dramatically different." Their advice: confirm pattern sizes before ordering the full size. They were right. A sample tells you the colour and the material. It cannot show you how big one repeat or one mural detail will be across a 12-foot wall.

Do this before you order:

  1. Ask Howdy for the printed size of one repeat, or where a mural's main detail will fall at your width × height. Each design is printed to your wall size, so the answer depends on your dimensions.
  2. Cut a sheet of paper to that size, tape it to the wall at the height it will sit, and look at it from the seat farthest from the wall.
  3. Check what the furniture hides. A large motif can be cut in half by a sofa; a tiny one can blur into texture from across the room.

Concept image. Tape one repeat at its printed size to the wall and look at it from the farthest seat.

If the wall is an odd shape, send a photo. Another reviewer had an irregularly shaped wall, and Howdy's team "worked with us to ensure that this pattern would work on our wall."

Which material suits a living room wall?

Every design above comes in three materials. A living room is a dry room, so the choice is about how you will live with the wall and how long it will stay up.

Material As listed by Howdy Choose it when
Peel and Stick Texture 280 microns, caviar texture, self-adhesive You rent, or want a wall you can change later. Howdy recommends it for busy spaces because it can be cleaned gently.
Canvas Non Woven 300 microns, canvas finish, for walls and ceilings You want a substantial, longer-term wall, or you plan to paper the ceiling too.
Standard Paper 220 microns, smooth matte finish You want a flat matte look on a smooth, dry wall.

Peel and Stick Texture needs a smooth, clean, fully cured wall; see the wall prep guide. If you rent, check your lease and the material's removal instructions first. Our materials guide compares all three in detail.

How to order for one living room wall

  1. Measure the wall's width and height at several points and keep the largest of each. Our measuring guide shows how.
  2. Enter the size on the product page in inches, centimeters or feet. The wallpaper is made to measure and priced per square foot.
  3. Expect extra at the edges. Howdy supplies extra material on purpose so you can trim to an uneven ceiling or corner. It is not a printing error.
  4. Send a photo of the wall with its furniture if you are ordering a mural, so the crop can be placed above the sofa, around the TV or within the chimney breast.

Before you order: a five-point check

  • ☐ I know which wall I am papering and what stands in front of it.
  • ☐ The design does not compete with an existing fireplace or media wall.
  • ☐ I have looked at the sample in daylight and in the evening.
  • ☐ I have tested one repeat at its printed size from the farthest seat.
  • ☐ I have measured the wall at several points and chosen a material.

Living room wallpaper FAQ

Which wall should be the accent wall in a living room?

Usually the wall behind the sofa or the one you see first as you walk in. If the room already has a fireplace or media wall, paper that feature or choose a quiet design for every wall, rather than adding a second focal point.

Should you wallpaper the TV wall?

Yes, with a dark, low-contrast design. A black screen on a pale, busy pattern looks like a hole; on a dark ground it sits back into the wall. See idea 2.

Can you wallpaper all four walls of a living room?

Yes. A small repeat or a texture works best, because it reads as a background. Keep large murals and bold geometrics to one wall or a chimney breast.

Does wallpaper make a living room look bigger?

Not measurably. Pale grounds and small or textural patterns can make a room feel more open, and vertical stripes draw the eye up, but these are impressions. Judge them in your own room with a sample.

What wallpaper is best for a living room wall?

The one that fits the wall: a high-detail mural behind a sofa, a dark floral on a TV wall, a bold geometric on a chimney breast, a small repeat on all four walls. Browse the living room wallpaper collection by style once you know which wall you are designing for.

Is peel and stick wallpaper good for a living room?

It is a practical choice, especially for renters and busy rooms, if the wall is smooth, clean and fully cured. A heavily textured wall needs preparation first.

Start with one wall

Pick the wall, photograph it with the furniture in place, and shortlist two or three designs that suit what stands in front of it. Then ask for the printed scale, test it from the far seat, and order to size. If you are working on a bedroom next, our bedroom accent wall guide uses the same wall-first approach.

I would caution anyone ordering wallpaper from here to order a sample and carefully consider how the pattern will be scaled before purchasing. I ordered a sample specifically so I could see the color, texture, material, and pattern before committing to wallpaper for an entire wall. Based on what I saw from the sample, I purchased the full size wallpaper. When the full wallpaper arrived, it was dramatically different in appearance and not at all what I was looking for, for my wall. I would recommend confirming with the seller pattern sizes before ordering a full scale. While I was extremely disappointed, in the end the seller was very responsive and did make the situation right. I was very appreciative.

The shipping was very quick! But the package arrived with the label barely hanging on. The prints look very good and the sample came with two options of pattern size. Tho they do have a logo printed on the front fairly large so I'll have to cut that off if I want to use the other sized print for something else so you lose a bit of length.
