how to prepare walls for wallpaper

Start with the surface you actually have. This guide helps you plan repairs, cleaning, primer and drying before you hang wallpaper, with a checklist to take to your supplier.

To prepare walls for wallpaper, identify the surface, repair anything loose or uneven, remove dirt and residue, then use the preparation system specified for your wallpaper.** The finished surface needs to be sound, smooth, clean and dry. Painted drywall, bare drywall and a wall stripped of old paper can need different treatment. Choose your wallpaper material before choosing the primer or setting an installation date.

You do not need to strip every painted wall back to bare drywall. You do need to find out whether the finish already on it is a suitable base.

Start with the wall you have

Look across the wall in daylight, including the area behind furniture. Notice raised repair edges, glossy patches, peeling paint and any old wallpaper seams. A light held sideways across the surface can make small ridges easier to see. Take a full-wall photo and close-ups of anything questionable before buying supplies.

Use this table to choose your next step. It is a planning guide; your selected wallcovering's instructions determine the final products and sequence.

Existing surface

What to investigate

Preparation direction

Smooth, firmly bonded paint

Paint type, sheen, age and any residue

Clean and repair as needed; confirm the required base coat and cure time for the chosen wallpaper.

Glossy painted wall

Whether the installation system accepts that finish

Follow the specified deglossing or primer method. Confirm the coating is safe to disturb before sanding.

Bare drywall or fresh joint compound

Dry joints, dust, exposed porous areas

Finish repairs and use the specified sealing or priming system. Do not hang directly onto unprepared drywall.

Wall stripped of old wallpaper

Remaining backing, paste, torn drywall facing

Remove old covering and adhesive; assess damage before selecting a repair and sealer system.

Textured wall

Texture depth and the selected material's surface restrictions

Decide whether smoothing is needed before proceeding. A thicker paper cannot establish compatibility.

Damp, soft or actively deteriorating wall

The cause of moisture or damage

Stop and resolve the underlying problem before planning wallpaper.

ROMAN's manufacturer guide distinguishes primer choices for bare drywall, sound paint and damaged surfaces. Its products and recommendations belong to its installation systems; they are not an approval for every Howdy material.

Generated inspection concept. Side light helps you locate irregularities; a photograph cannot establish that a wall is dry or structurally sound.

Resolve the problems wallpaper cannot fix

Recurring water stains, dampness, soft drywall, loose plaster or peeling paint need attention before decoration. Painting or papering over the visible mark does not resolve its cause. The EPA's moisture guide advises fixing water problems and avoiding painting over moldy surfaces. If damage keeps returning, get the cause assessed before covering it.

There is also a check to make before scraping or sanding old paint. For a US home built before 1978, consult the EPA's lead-safe renovation guidance; EPA recommends a lead-safe certified contractor for this work. Treat an unknown old textured coating as something to investigate before disturbing it.

If you rent, confirm permission for the preparation as well as the wallpaper. Filling, priming or resurfacing a wall may change the finish you are expected to return.

Once the wall is a suitable candidate, move furniture away and protect the floor. Gather clean cloths, a bucket, a filling knife and the repair products specified for the surface. Add sanding and priming tools only when those steps are appropriate. Avoid working around live electrical fittings; have any required work on sockets or switches handled safely, with the relevant power isolated.

Repair and clean in an order that suits the surface

For a sound painted wall, inspect small holes and raised patch edges rather than automatically sanding the entire wall. Fill minor defects with a suitable repair compound, allow it to dry as directed, and finish it flush where safe. Remove the resulting dust. Sherwin-Williams' prep guide includes patching, smoothing and priming previously painted walls; check your selected wallpaper's requirements before adopting a particular coating system.

For a dirty or greasy wall, cleaning may need to happen before repairs or coatings. Follow the maker's cleaning directions. Where a mild detergent wash is permitted, remove the cleaner with clean water and allow the surface to dry. Avoid leaving a film or soaking the wall. Rebel Walls' surface guide describes this wash-and-rinse approach for its painted surfaces.

For a previously papered wall, make removal and damage assessment the first job. Brewster's wall-preparation guidance advises removing old wallpaper. That gives you a useful conservative starting point: get to a base you can inspect instead of relying on an unknown old layer to support the new one. Follow a removal method suited to the old covering and wall beneath it.

Then check for leftover paste, backing paper and torn drywall facing. Do not treat a torn facing like an ordinary nail hole. ROMAN's guide to priming addresses old adhesive removal and preparation after stripping; get advice on the appropriate repair system if removal has damaged the board.

An example: imagine an otherwise smooth wall with several newly filled picture-hook holes. Cleaning the surrounding paint leaves you with a mixed surface: old paint beside fresh repair compound. Record that difference when asking about primer. “Painted wall with new patches” tells the supplier much more than “the wall looks fine.” This is a planning example, not a customer project.

Choose primer for the wall and the wallpaper

With pasted wallpaper, a suitable wallcovering primer can help control how the surface absorbs moisture and support positioning during installation. Bare drywall, fresh compound and sound paint do not necessarily call for the same product. See ROMAN's explanation of wallcovering primers, then check the chosen wallpaper and primer instructions together.

Ask a specific question: “Which primer or base coat is approved for this wall and this wallpaper material?” Include the paint finish, recent repairs and whether old wallpaper has been removed. A general-purpose paint primer you already own may not be the specified product.

Peel-and-stick needs its own check. For example, NuWallpaper's installation instructions exclude unpainted drywall, old wallpaper, textured surfaces and non-stick paint. Those limits apply to NuWallpaper. They demonstrate why a general pasted-wallpaper tutorial cannot settle the surface requirements for another self-adhesive material.

If an instruction mentions sizing, clarify the product it means. In wallpaper preparation, sizing refers to a surface treatment; it is separate from measuring the wall. Do not improvise a diluted-glue recipe or add paste behind self-adhesive wallpaper without written instructions for that system.

Plan around drying and curing

A wall that feels dry after cleaning and a newly painted wall that has fully cured have passed different checks. Repairs, primer and paint each have their own instructions. Record when each coat was applied, and keep the product names so you can check them again.

For context, NuWallpaper specifies a minimum four-week cure for newly painted surfaces before applying its peel-and-stick wallpaper. This is not a Howdy waiting period. Avoid building a weekend plan around another manufacturer's timing.

Use the longest applicable requirement in your chosen system, and resolve any conflicting directions with the makers before installation. New plaster or a wall affected by moisture needs assessment of its actual condition; a calendar date alone cannot certify readiness.

If you still need to paint adjacent trim or the ceiling, plan that work before the paper goes up. It is easier to protect an empty wall than a new mural.

Check the exact material on the prepared wall

Use a supplier-approved sample procedure on the intended surface, with the same material you plan to order. Ask how to apply it, how long to observe it and how to remove it. Note lifting edges, a visible repair ridge or any effect on the underlying finish. If something changes, pause and ask the supplier before committing to full-size panels.

A successful short test gives you information about that patch under those conditions. It does not guarantee long-term adhesion or damage-free removal, and it cannot override an explicit surface restriction.

For a wall with orange-peel or knockdown texture, continue with Howdy's textured-wall guide. For a bathroom, use the bathroom preparation guide to consider moisture exposure alongside surface preparation.

Your final check before ordering or hanging

Keep a short record of the wall so you can resolve questions without guessing:

- Surface: painted drywall, bare board, plaster or another identified base.

- Condition: firmly bonded finish; repairs completed; no unresolved dampness or deterioration.

- Cleaning: dust, grease, old backing and adhesive addressed; cleaning residue removed.

- Coatings: paint, repair and primer product names, application dates and required waiting periods recorded.

- Wallpaper: exact material selected; surface and preparation instructions checked together.

- Sample: approved procedure completed, with any concerns resolved before proceeding.

On a current Howdy product page, the material selector lists Standard Paper, Canvas Non Woven, and Peel and Stick Texture. Use the option you actually intend to buy when requesting preparation advice. A product title containing “peel and stick” does not replace checking that selection.

You can copy this message to Howdy's support team:

"I'm considering [design] in [selected material]. My wall is [surface and paint finish], last painted on [date], with [repairs or old wallpaper removal]. Here are a full-wall photo and close-ups. Which cleaner, repair treatment and primer or base coat do you recommend? How long must each coating cure, and what sample procedure should I follow before ordering?"

Once those answers are clear, use Howdy's measuring guide to record the intended wall dimensions and confirm the order allowance. Then choose the design you want to live with. The preparation has already given it a better starting point.

I would caution anyone ordering wallpaper from here to order a sample and carefully consider how the pattern will be scaled before purchasing. I ordered a sample specifically so I could see the color, texture, material, and pattern before committing to wallpaper for an entire wall. Based on what I saw from the sample, I purchased the full size wallpaper. When the full wallpaper arrived, it was dramatically different in appearance and not at all what I was looking for, for my wall. I would recommend confirming with the seller pattern sizes before ordering a full scale. While I was extremely disappointed, in the end the seller was very responsive and did make the situation right. I was very appreciative.

The shipping was very quick! But the package arrived with the label barely hanging on. The prints look very good and the sample came with two options of pattern size. Tho they do have a logo printed on the front fairly large so I'll have to cut that off if I want to use the other sized print for something else so you lose a bit of length.
