Bathroom Wallpaper Ideas: 9 Looks and the Walls They Belong On

A powder room can take almost any wallpaper. A full bathroom can too, on the right walls. Here are nine looks with real designs, the zone each one suits, and what to check before you order.

The best bathroom wallpaper idea depends on where the water lands first and on taste second. A powder room can take almost any

design, including the darkest and busiest. A full bathroom can take wallpaper too, but only on the walls the shower and tub do not reach. So choose the wall first, then the look. Below are three bathroom zones, nine ideas with real designs you can order, and the checks to make before you buy.

First, sort your bathroom walls into three zones

Zone

Typical walls

Wallpaper?

Powder room or half bath (no shower or tub)

Every wall, and often the ceiling

Yes. This is the place for the boldest ideas.

Full bathroom, away from water

Vanity wall, the wall opposite the shower, the wall above tile or wainscoting

Yes, with an exhaust fan and the right material for that wall.

Shower and tub splash walls

Inside the shower, walls the bathtub regularly splashes

No. Use tile or another wet-area surface.

This is not a matter of style. Howdy's wallpaper is designed for interior walls and should not be installed where water is constant, such as inside a shower or on a wall a bathtub regularly splashes bathroom FAQ. A vanity wall in a powder room has different demands from a shower surround, and the ideas below are matched to the zone they suit.

One rule comes before any pattern: if a wall shows a leak, recurring condensation, soft drywall or peeling paint, fix the cause first. Wallpaper hides a moisture problem; it never solves one. Our bathroom wall prep guide covers the inspection step by step.

9 bathroom wallpaper ideas, and where each one works

1. A dark floral in the powder room

A powder room is small and seen briefly, so it can carry a pattern you might find heavy in a bedroom. Midnight Purple Peony Floral, original artwork by Uta Naumann, sets deep violet peonies on a near-black ground. Against it, a white basin and white trim look sharper, not smaller.

The contrast is what makes it work. Designer Rebekah Zaveloff of KitchenLab Interiors used near-black, gold-embossed paper in a tiny powder room and kept it from feeling cave-like with bright white trim and white fixtures; her summary, reported by Chairish, was "It's all about the contrast." Check a dark sample with the vanity light on, because a dark ground absorbs light that a pale wall would reflect.

Best zone: powder room. In a full bath, only on walls away from water.

2. Black marble with gold veining

Stone-look paper gives a bathroom the colour and movement of marble without the weight or the slab. Luxury Black Marble with Gold Vein has gold and white veining on a deep black ground. It pairs naturally with brass taps, a black-framed mirror and a white or warm-wood vanity.

Order a sample first. The size of the veining decides whether it reads as one dramatic slab or a busy pattern, and that depends on the width of your wall.

Best zone: powder room, or the vanity wall of a full bath.

### 3. Terrazzo for a modern, low-fuss look

Terrazzo is one of the easiest patterns to live with in a bathroom. Seamless Terrazzo in Black and Gray scatters charcoal, slate and off-white chips on a white ground. Because the chips are small and evenly spread, the wall reads as texture from the doorway and has no single focal point for the mirror to hide.

Pair it with plain white tile, matte black fixtures and one warm material, such as oak or rattan, so the room does not turn cold.

Best zone: any wall away from water, in a powder room or a full bath.

### 4. Art Deco fans with black-and-white tile

An Art Deco repeat suits bathrooms with some architectural order: a checkerboard floor, a framed mirror, a pair of sconces. Art Deco Fan Wallpaper in Green and Gold repeats an emerald and gold fan in a regular grid, which echoes the lines of tile without imitating it.

Because the design repeats on a strict grid, a cut row is noticeable at the top of a tile line or a ceiling. When you order a custom size, ask Howdy where the pattern will start.

Best zone: powder room, or the upper wall above tile in a full bath.

5. A tropical mural on the vanity wall

A botanical mural brings the scale of a garden into a room with no view. Tropical Botanical Green Jungle Mural layers palm fronds, monstera and vines in shades of green.

A mural needs more planning than a repeat. On a vanity wall, the mirror, cabinet and lights cover the centre of the wall, which is often where a mural's main detail sits. Photograph the wall, draw the mirror's outline on the photo and send it to Howdy before you order, so the large leaves frame the mirror instead of disappearing behind it.

Best zone: the vanity wall or the wall facing the door.

6. A watercolor ocean for a calm, spa-style bath

If you want colour without busy pattern, choose an abstract design. Watercolor Ocean Wallpaper uses non-repeating aqua and teal brushstrokes with flecks of white. It sits well with white fixtures, pale wood and linen towels, and does not compete with a patterned floor.

Put it on the wall that faces the tub, not the one the tub splashes.

Best zone: a full bath, on a dry feature wall.

7. Wallpaper above tile or wainscoting

In a family bathroom, this is the most practical idea on the list. Tile or wainscoting protects the lower wall from splashes, and the wallpaper takes the upper wall, where it is seen and rarely touched. Designer Nadia Palacios used this approach in a boy's bathroom. She chose the tile first, in his favourite colour, then looked for a wallpaper with a contrasting colour (Chairish).

Follow her order: fix the hard finish first, then choose a pattern that picks up one of its colours. A folk floral such as Pressed Garden in Green, cream motifs on a deep olive ground, works above white beadboard or green tile.

Best zone: full bathrooms, especially the ones children use.

8. Paper the ceiling

A papered ceiling turns a small powder room into what designers call a jewel box. Designer Jasmin Reese carried a playful wallpaper from the walls onto the ceiling for exactly that effect (via Chairish). It works best in a square room with a low or average ceiling, where the pattern overhead is close enough to read.

Keep this idea to powder rooms unless Howdy confirms otherwise. Howdy lists Canvas Non Woven as suitable for walls and ceilings, but in a bathroom with a shower, steam collects at the ceiling first.

Best zone: powder room.

9. A quiet pattern behind a statement vanity

If the room already has a feature, such as a carved vanity, a vintage mirror or a coloured tile, the wallpaper's job is to support it. For a Southern Living Showhouse, designer Becky Nielsen paired a sky-blue, tile-inspired trellis paper with a custom scalloped vanity; the paper "recedes just enough" to let the vanity lead (Chairish).

Choose a low-contrast design in soft colours, such as Neutral Geometric in Soft Sage, a quiet fan line in sage and beige, so the two do not compete.

image-13-neutral-geometric-soft-sage.jpg

Best zone: any wall away from water.

Pattern scale in a small bathroom

Small bathrooms do not require small patterns, but scale behaves differently there. The toilet, vanity and mirror cover much of the lower and middle wall, so what you actually see is often a band of pattern around the mirror and above the fixtures. Look at the wall from the doorway and from the mirror, not from across an empty room.

There are two sound approaches. A light ground with a smaller pattern keeps the room open; Howdy's own FAQ suggests this for small bathrooms. A dark, all-over design blurs the corners and makes the room feel deliberate, as long as the trim and fixtures are light. Neither is a rule; both depend on your light. Bathrooms often have one overhead light or a vanity light, so view the sample at night as well as in daylight.

A repeat pattern tolerates being cut by a mirror or cabinet. A mural does not, so plan the crop before you order.

Which Howdy material suits a bathroom wall?

Every Howdy design comes in three materials. Here is what the product pages state about each:

Material

As listed by Howdy

Bathroom note

Standard Paper

220 microns, smooth matte finish, paste-the-paper installation

Best kept to powder rooms and dry walls.

Canvas Non Woven

300 microns, canvas texture, listed for walls and ceilings

Check with Howdy before using it on a full-bath ceiling.

Peel and Stick Texture

280 microns, textured finish, self-adhesive, removable

Howdy recommends it for busy spaces because it can be cleaned gently.

Two cautions. First, when a product page says the peel-and-stick option is "ideal for bathrooms", that refers to its non-toxic inks, not to a moisture rating. Second, none of the three materials is sold as waterproof. For a full bathroom, tell Howdy which zone the wall is in, whether you have an exhaust fan and what the wall finish is, and ask which material it recommends. Howdy answers these questions directly on WhatsApp.

Before you order: a five-point check

  1. Mark the zone of every wall. Leave the shower and the walls the tub splashes off the list.

  2. Deal with moisture first. Repair leaks and condensation damage, and use the exhaust fan when you bathe. The EPA's moisture guidance recommends venting bathrooms to control humidity.

  3. Measure the full wall. Record width and height at several points and keep the largest numbers (how to measure a wall for wallpaper). Howdy prints to your size and adds a little extra around the edges on purpose, so you can trim cleanly. That margin is not a sizing error.

  4. Sample in the room. Tape a sample next to the mirror and view it from the doorway in daylight and at night.

  5. Plan murals around fixtures. Send Howdy a photo of the wall with the mirror's outline marked. If the wall is textured, read the textured walls guide first.

Bathroom wallpaper FAQ

Can you put wallpaper in a bathroom?

Yes, on walls that do not get direct water. Powder rooms can take wallpaper on every wall. In a full bathroom, use it on the vanity wall, the walls away from the shower and above tile or wainscoting, and run the exhaust fan.

Is bathroom wallpaper waterproof?

Howdy's wallpaper is not sold as waterproof. It is designed for interior walls and should not go inside a shower or on walls a bathtub regularly splashes. Use tile in those areas.

What wallpaper works best in a small bathroom?

Either a light ground with a smaller pattern, which keeps the room open, or a dark all-over design with light trim and fixtures, which makes the room feel deliberate. Choose by viewing a sample in the room's own light.

Can you wallpaper a bathroom ceiling?

In a powder room, yes, and it is one of the strongest ideas for a small space. In a bathroom with a shower, steam collects at the ceiling, so confirm the material with Howdy before you order.

Is peel and stick wallpaper good for bathrooms?

It is a good choice for powder rooms and for full-bath walls away from water, provided the wall is smooth, clean and sound. Howdy recommends its Peel and Stick Texture for busy spaces because it can be cleaned gently. It is not for showers or tub surrounds.

Can you put wallpaper over bathroom tile?

Not directly. Glazed tile and grout lines do not give wallpaper a smooth, absorbent base. The better approach is to keep the tile on the lower wall and wallpaper the wall above it.

Start with one wall

Pick the wall, then the look. If you are unsure, start with the powder room or the vanity wall, where the design is seen most and the water reaches least. Browse bathroom wallpaper designs, order a sample of the two you like best, and send Howdy your wall size and a photo if you would like help with the crop, the scale or the material.

I would caution anyone ordering wallpaper from here to order a sample and carefully consider how the pattern will be scaled before purchasing. I ordered a sample specifically so I could see the color, texture, material, and pattern before committing to wallpaper for an entire wall. Based on what I saw from the sample, I purchased the full size wallpaper. When the full wallpaper arrived, it was dramatically different in appearance and not at all what I was looking for, for my wall. I would recommend confirming with the seller pattern sizes before ordering a full scale. While I was extremely disappointed, in the end the seller was very responsive and did make the situation right. I was very appreciative.

The shipping was very quick! But the package arrived with the label barely hanging on. The prints look very good and the sample came with two options of pattern size. Tho they do have a logo printed on the front fairly large so I'll have to cut that off if I want to use the other sized print for something else so you lose a bit of length.
